Welcome to The Book Room FAQ page! Below are answers to some of our most common questions about shopping, events, trade-ins, book fairs, and more. If you still need help, feel free to reach out — we’re always happy to help however we can.

Visiting The Store

Where are you located?

You can find us at 104 Broad St, Wilkesboro, NC 28659. We’re located behind Dooley’s and the Wilkes Heritage Museum in historic downtown Wilkesboro.

Is parking available?

Yes! We have a small parking lot available for customers. There is also public street parking along Main Street and nearby surrounding streets.

Is your store wheelchair and stroller accessible?

Our front entrance does have stairs, but we also have a side entrance that is wheelchair and stroller accessible. If the side door is locked, just knock and we’ll gladly open it for you!

Are children welcome?

Absolutely! While most of our inventory is geared toward adult readers, we do have a small children’s section and love welcoming young readers into the store.

Do you sell coffee or food?

We do not serve coffee or food in-store, but we do carry packaged teas and tea accessories available for purchase.

Can I sit and read or work in the store?

At this time, we do not have seating available inside the store due to our small space. However, there are public picnic tables located just outside nearby that are available to use.

Are pets allowed?

Service animals and friendly leashed pets are welcome!

Shopping & Orders

Do you offer local pickup?

Yes! We offer local pickup during our regular business hours. We’ll send you a notification when your order is ready for pickup.

Can I request a book you don’t currently have in stock?

Absolutely! If there’s a book or item you’re looking for that you don’t see on our website, send us a message on Facebook, email us at info@thebookroomnc.com, or text us at (828) 244-8932. Our store phone is monitored during business hours, though we may not always be able to answer calls due to an influx of spam calls. We’re always happy to help however we can!

What if an item says “in stock” but is unavailable?

We do our best to keep inventory accurate and complete inventory counts regularly, but as a small independent bookstore, occasional inventory errors can happen due to in-store sales and other factors. If an item becomes unavailable after purchase, we’ll contact you as soon as possible with options.

How long will you hold books?

Unpaid holds and requests are held for 48 business hours unless otherwise discussed.

Paid orders will be held for 90 days. We will attempt to contact customers three times before restocking items. Because these items were reserved specifically for you and removed from active inventory, orders not picked up within that timeframe may be returned to inventory without refund. If you communicate with us, we’re happy to work with you on a case-by-case basis.

Do you carry Bibles and Bible accessories?

We do not regularly stock Bibles or Bible accessories in-store due to the large number of versions and options available. However, we are happy to special order specific items whenever possible.

What kinds of books and products do you carry?

We carry a curated selection of new books, pre-loved books, bargain books, stationery, tea, reader essentials, gifts, and more. While we focus primarily on fiction and general interest titles, we’re always happy to special order books and items when possible.

Do you carry textbooks, homeschool curriculum, or academic materials?

We do not regularly stock textbooks, homeschool curriculum, or heavily academic materials, but we may be able to special order specific titles upon request.

Are online prices the same as in-store prices?

Yes! Our online prices match our in-store prices.

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes! Gift cards can be purchased both online and in-store, and they can be used either online or in-store as well.

Pre-Orders

How do pre-orders work?

We regularly add highly anticipated upcoming releases to our website for pre-order. Simply place your order the same way you would any other order on our site.

Once the book arrives, we’ll contact you to let you know it’s ready for pickup or shipment.

Can pre-orders be shipped?

Yes! Pre-orders can either be picked up in-store or shipped directly to you. Shipping can be selected and paid for during checkout.

Please note that if your order includes multiple pre-order titles with different release dates, the books may need to ship separately as they become available. In those cases, additional shipping charges may apply.

What if I don’t see the book I’m looking for?

If there’s an upcoming release you’d like that you don’t see listed on our website, contact us! We’re always happy to check on upcoming titles and special orders whenever possible.

Shipping & Returns

Do you ship orders?

Yes! We do offer shipping. Shipping can be selected and paid for during checkout.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping times may vary depending on the item and carrier, but we do our best to process and ship orders as quickly as possible.

Do you accept returns or exchanges?

At this time, we do not accept returns or exchanges on books.

Trade-Ins & Used Books

Do you accept used book trade-ins?

Yes! We accept trade-ins on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. Saturday trade-ins may be available upon request — please contact us ahead of time.

What kinds of books do you accept?

We primarily accept newer releases, current books, popular titles, and classics. Book condition, release date, and current demand all help determine whether we can accept a title.

How much store credit do you offer?

Most paperbacks receive around $1 in store credit and most hardbacks receive around $2, though offers may vary based on condition, popularity, and demand.

Do you offer cash or store credit?

We currently offer store credit for accepted trade-ins.

Book Fairs & Community Partnerships

Do you offer school book fairs?

Yes! We partner with schools in Wilkes and surrounding areas to host book fairs with curated selections from multiple publishers and vendors — not just one source. We handle setup, checkout, tear down, marketing support, and bring volunteers when available to help events run smoothly.

If you’re interested in hosting a school book fair, please contact our Events & Community Outreach Coordinator at events@thebookroomnc.com. We also have an informational packet available upon request.

Do you partner with local businesses for book fairs or pop-up events?

Absolutely! We love partnering with local businesses and community spaces to host adult book fairs, pop-up events, and other bookish experiences throughout Wilkes and surrounding areas.

Can I host a book club at The Book Room?

Yes! We do allow small book clubs and private gatherings at the store. Please keep in mind that our space is very small (around 400 sq ft) and we do not currently have dedicated seating, so group size is limited.

Are you hiring?

At this time, we are not currently hiring. As a small and still-growing independent bookstore, our team is currently very small. We truly appreciate the interest and support, and any future job opportunities will be announced on our website and social media pages.
